Eligibility

What you need to apply

South Dakota licensing requires passing each USMLE component within three attempts and within seven years from Step 1 through Step 3.

US allopathic / osteopathic graduates

For US graduates

  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) / Dean's letter
  • Personal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • USMLE or COMLEX transcript
  • Medical school transcript
  • Eligibility for SD resident licensure

International medical graduates

For IMG applicants

  • Everything required for US graduates
  • Familiarity with US healthcare systems
  • USMLE steps passed on the first attempt
  • ECFMG certification
  • Excellent written + spoken English
  • Clinical experience within the last two years
  • Valid US permanent residency, citizenship, or employment visa (program does not sponsor visas)
  • Must have graduated within the last 5 years

Interview day

What to expect when you visit

Interviews run from late October through January, typically 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The day includes time with the program director, faculty interviews, time with current residents, facility tours, and lunch.

Hotel accommodations are provided for out-of-town candidates. You won't be paying for a hotel to interview here.

  2. 9:15 a.m. Faculty interviews
  3. 11:00 a.m. Facility tour — Avera + CFM
  4. 12:00 p.m. Lunch with current residents
  5. 12:30 p.m. Resident Q&A + program manager
  6. 1:00 p.m. Wrap-up + next steps
