Medical Student Elective Rotations

Get a feel for our residency program, community, and education style by scheduling a med student elective rotation. You’ll gain hands on experience while working alongside our staff and residents, take tours of our healthcare systems and clinics, and learn more about how you can customize your residency education through our large number of electives. Application Criteria

Below is the criteria for both US and International medical graduates.

US Medical/Osteopathic Graduate Criteria

  • MSPE
  • Transcript
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • USMLE or COMLEX transcript*
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • You must be able to be licensed in SD, which requires passage of each component of the USMLE in three attempts or less, and in a seven year time span, from first attempt of USMLE through successful completion of Part 3.
  • Able to obtain resident licensure through the SD Board of Medical & Osteopathic Examiners

International Medical Graduate Criteria

The minimum criteria for foreign medical graduates that must be met to be considered for interviews in our program:

  • All criteria as stated above for US medical/osteopathic graduates.
  • USMLE scores must be 210 or higher on parts 1 and 2 on the first attempt, and the interval from passing Part 1 to Part 3 must not be greater than 7 years.
  • USMLE Step 2 CS must be passed on the first attempt.
  • You must be ECFMG certified.
  • You must have lived in the US for at least two years.
  • You must have permanent residency or citizenship.
  • Time interval since completion of formal training (medical school or residency) must be less than 3 years.
  • Time interval since most recent clinical experience (educational or practice) must be less than two years.
  • You must demonstrate excellent and understandable written and spoken English language communication skills.
  • All applications are accepted through ERAS, and resident acceptance is accomplished through the NRMP Match process.
  • Able to obtain resident licensure through the SD Board of Medical & Osteopathic Examiners

We will be following the AAMC recommendations for all interviews to be done virtually for the 2021-2022 interview season.

• Interviews will be scheduled via email through Interview Broker on selected Monday and Tuesday mornings from November through January.
• Applicants will meet with the Program Director, Program Coordinator, and core faculty members.
• We will have informal time set aside the evening prior to your visit so you can meet some of our residents and ask questions of them.

Please do not call to check the status of your application or your USMLE score reports. Notifications of application status will be emailed on a regular basis as applications are reviewed and decisions have been made. Details of decisions cannot be provided on an individual basis due to the number of applications.
